Summer is a wonderful time of year for rest, relaxation, and exciting activities. While it’s important to have fun and get exercise during the hotter months, it’s wise to be mindful of the dental injuries many summer pastimes can cause so you can take measures to prevent them. Here’s a short list of favorite summer activities that can damage your teeth along with a few ways to minimize these risks while you enjoy your fun in the sun.

Don’t Let Summer Sports Harm Your Smile

Many people love to play contact sports such as baseball, soccer, basketball, and football during the summer. While these are all certainly excellent ways to exercise while having fun, they also involve many risks to your dental health. Tripping or sustaining a blow to the face can lead to injuries like chipped, cracked, broken, or even dislodged teeth. To prevent this, always wear an athletic mouthguard to cushion your teeth against trauma while playing sports.

Be Careful Around the Pool

Summer is a great time to enjoy some fun in the water, but hanging out by the pool involves some risk of dental injury. Children are notorious for running around pools, and slipping on the wet surface of a pool deck can lead to dental injuries. Diving into shallow water is another great way to break a tooth. Make sure that everyone is aware of these dangers so they can exercise the appropriate caution by walking around the pool instead of running and being aware of how deep the water is before jumping in.

Mind the Sugary Sweets

Summer is the hottest time of year, so many people enjoy indulging in sweet cold treats like ice cream, soda, popsicles, and snow cones. Unfortunately, these are all bad for your teeth because they contain tons of sugar that feeds harmful oral bacteria. Soda is especially bad because it is also loaded with enamel-eroding acid, and eating a snow cone involves chewing on ice that can chip away at your teeth. If you can’t stay away from these treats completely, enjoy them in moderation and be sure to drink plenty of water to help flush their residue from your teeth.

People want to remember their summer vacations as times full of fun and adventure, not as ordeals full of oral injuries and emergency dental visits. By taking the proper precautions, you can keep your smile in great shape throughout the summer and the rest of the year.
