Whiter Teeth Aren’t Always Healthier – Here’s Why!

Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you. A bright, white smile tends to be associated with youthfulness and good health. However, a whiter smile doesn’t always mean that it is healthy. There are various reasons why discoloration can happen, and the concept that white teeth are healthier was suggested by advertising. Read on to learn more about why healthy teeth aren’t always pearly white.

Teeth Are Naturally Slightly Yellow

These days, we have become slightly obsessed with having white teeth, but the truth is that naturally white teeth have a slight yellow tint to them. The enamel of the teeth is the part that you can see when you smile, and it is a blue-white color. However, the middle layer of the tooth is called the “dentin,” and this is naturally yellow. Ultimately, if you have a healthy dense layer of dentin covered by sufficient enamel, your teeth should be an off-white color with a slightly yellow appearance.

Teeth Become Discolored with Age

When you get older, you will likely notice that your teeth become more discolored. Even if you keep up an excellent oral hygiene routine, this change will still happen over time. This is due to the tooth enamel becoming thinner, so you can see the dentin more. If you enjoy coffee or tea on a regular basis, smoke, or eat dark colored foods, this contributes to discoloration. Your genetics can even play a role in how white your teeth are. Having a slightly discolored smile doesn’t immediately mean that they aren’t healthy. During your routine dental visits, your dentist will be on the lookout for issues that need to be addressed.

Some Stains Indicate Problems

Discoloration isn’t usually something to be worried about. However, there are some stains that can suggest issues. For example, fluorosis can change the color of the teeth. Green stains can indicate bacteria or fungi. Red, black, or brown stains could be linked to porphyria, a rare genetic condition. If you have concerns about discoloration or stains, bring them up to your dentist during your next visit. This way, you can discuss if there are any indications of a problem as well as cosmetic solutions if you aren’t happy with the state of your smile.

Discoloration isn’t always an issue, and it is a natural part of getting older. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, talk to your dentist. This way, you can work together to keep your pearly whites healthy and beautiful!
